I have been a server for a little over a year now and I have a few things I would love to say about my experiences. Firstly, people do not give waitress and waiters enough credit. We work so hard and so much, sometimes to just get paid nothing. The worst part is when after you learn that a table has not tipped you, you have to keep it moving and finish serving your other five tables, hoping they'll give you enough money to pay for gas that night. For those of you who do not know what a double is, a double is when you work all day, usually from open to close. Basically, you work two shifts, the morning and the night shift with a break in between. Imagine this as your Saturday night.
Its been a tough, fairly slow morning, you've made at least 50 dollars. Not bad, but not good either. You're feet are literarlly aching but now its the start of a new shift and its slammed. You really need a break and some food, yet you are forced to run around getting five drinks for the two people for table three. Then, run all the way to table 6 to check on them to find out they want extra ranch, so you run all the way to the kitchen to get the ranch. Once you are back at the table, you set the ranch down, and ask "do you guys need anything else?" A question you are praying they say no to, but the other person asks if they can get a togo box. So, you run to the server station, and on your way there, table 5 is waving you down just to ask if you can go check on your food. You smile and say yes, even though you going back there to check on their food is not going to make it cook any faster. You come out of the kitchen and explain to table five that the food should be out in just a minute, but you know that the steak they ordered only 5 minutes ago, has not even been placed on the grill yet. Oh wait, you forgot about table 6, so you top by the server station where you go to pick up a togo box, but they are all out. You are probably not the first sever to notice, but it is saturday night and everyone is up to the eyebrows in work. You can see table 6 looking at you, just waiting. You take off to the storage room where you scoop up a couple of boxes, restock the server station and print out the check for table 6. You stop by and place the togo boxes on the table place two togo boxes and the check. The bill is 29.80 and pay in cash. They give you thirty dollars in ones and tell you to keep the change as your tip, as if you were not already. Even though the fact the you just got twenty cents for waiting on them for two hours is haunting you, you need to go check in the kitchen for table 5's food. It is finally ready, so you take all the plates out set them down in front of your guests and ask if they need anything else. They all reply no, which you thank God for. You go back in the kitchen and pick up another severs food. You bring it to the table that is printed on the ticket. You ask who had the pasta that is currently giving your hand third degree burns and they all reply with blank stares as of you are suppose to know, but it is not your table. Finally, someone says something and you place all of the plates down correctly. You head back to the kitchen, but you are stopped by a table that is not yours. "Can I get a refill?" which you reply to "Im not your waitress." Then he says, "I know, I just want another coke" In your head you say, "NO, DONT YOU SEE THAT I HAVE ALL OF THESE TABLES AND I AM RUNNING AROUND HERE LIKE A CHICKEN WITH ITS HEAD CUT OFF AND YOU WANT ME, SOMEONE WHO IS NOT YOUR SERVER, TO GET YOU A FREAKING COKE EVEN THOUGH YOUR DRINK IS NOT EVEN EMPTY YET?!!!?" Still, you go to the back and bring the man a coke back with a smile. You finally get back to the server station, it is starting to slow down. You can barely see straight and your hands are raw from washing them so much and touching hot plates. You finally only have one table left and they are pretty laid back for the most part. The order beers and promise you they are going to order food soon, you already know that they are going to oder another round and then call it a night, leaving the bill to barley reach 20 dollars causing a decline in your sales and a $4 at most. You finally catch a look at the clock and it is 9pm. You close at 12am and you still have THREE FREAKING HOURS LEFT.
This is a double. I get home at 2 am at the earliest after restocking, rolling silverware, and waiting for the manager to let me leave. Please be kind to your servers and tip ac-cordingly. Even if the service was not good, they still deserve to get paid. A lot of people don't know that servers make a solid $2.15 an hour. Then after taxes get taken out my check usually says void. My last serving check, I made a solid 10 cents, which is not even big enough to deposit if I even wanted to. Also, some people say that we choose this job, which is true. But, we didn't choose this job to kiss your asses all day for 10 cents. '
